Literaturee: Weltkunst, 1. Januar 1950, ‘Ein Königsporträt aus dem 14. Jahrhundert’, title page and p. 5: “an immensely important, but unknown to date, portrait from the trecento not only for art history but also for the development of the portrait within the history of European painting ”.

According to ‘Weltkunst’ the painting was the subject of several months' continuous investigation and treatment by conservators, Willemsen and Kohler of the Städtische Kunstsammlungen Düsseldorf.’ (see the extensive report in ‘Weltkunst’. The head of the courtly, elegant warrior in Simone Martini's fresco in the lower church of San Francesco in Assisi served as a precedent for this painting.’ As King of Naples, Robert d'Anjou was the most powerful opponent of Emperor Heinrich VII. However, he was unsuccessful in this attempts to increase French influence in Italy.
